Sun on your skin and water in your hair. Ah, summer feels so wonderful. But what sounds like pure relaxation to you means a daily test of endurance for your hair. Especially on vacation, by the pool or the sea, your hair structure is subjected to more stress than at any other time of year.
The good news for you is that you can protect your hair effectively! We'll show you what water, sun, and salt really do to your hair.

Why your hair structure suffers silently in summer
No matter how you spend your vacation: whether you're relaxing in the pool or diving headfirst into the next saltwater wave, your hair will feel the effects pretty quickly. Even after just a few seconds, water changes its physical structure, and depending on its composition, this can have quite contrasting effects.
Chlorine in pools strips hair of essential moisture, often leaving it brittle and dull. Seawater, on the other hand, while high in salt, also contains a wealth of minerals that, in small doses, can even have a conditioning effect. Nevertheless, after swimming comes the conditioning. Thorough rinsing is essential to prevent residue from building up.
With the right care, you can protect your hair structure and effectively prevent dryness or breakage. It's best to focus on moisturizing products and a routine that strengthens your hair and helps it stay healthy, no matter how wild the summer gets!

Chlorinated water
While chlorine ensures clear water, it does little to diminish the shine and manageability of your hair. The high pH value of chlorinated water opens the outer cuticle layer, effectively destroying your hair's natural protective layer. Valuable lipids and proteins are lost in the process, leaving your hair dull, dry, and difficult to comb.
Especially bleached or dyed hair can even turn greenish. This effect has nothing to do with a fresh sea breeze, but rather with metal ions like copper, manganese, or iron in the water, which react with chlorine. In such cases, an acidic color remover, best done at your trusted hairdresser, can help. However, gentle home remedies with an acidic pH (e.g., a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse or a lemon juice hair mask) can also salvage the situation. Even untreated hair isn't immune—it's just not quite as susceptible.
Chlorinated water can also irritate the scalp. It disrupts the natural pH balance and can lead to itching or irritation. Generally, open hair follicles are like an open invitation to anything that damages your hair, such as UV radiation, mechanical stress, or harsh water treatment agents like ozone.
After swimming, you should definitely rinse your hair with clean water. This helps remove chlorine residue and stabilize the hair structure. Regular washing and conditioning will prevent your hair from drying out. If you skip this step, your hair will quickly become rough and brittle, and that beautiful summer glow will turn into a hair disaster. Use a suitable hair mask after swimming to protect your hair and keep it soft, especially if it's frequently in chlorinated water.

Saltwater
The sea is a blessing for the soul and a curse for your long hair. Saltwater draws out moisture through osmosis and simultaneously throws the pH balance off. The result is dry, stiff ends and a brittle finish. And your curls quickly lose their definition.
Seawater contains minerals that become trapped in the hair, forming salt bridges that increasingly harden the hair structure. This makes the hair inflexible and, over time, brittle. The effects are particularly noticeable in long or chemically treated hair, resulting in tangles, split ends, and hours of detangling after a day at the beach.
The scalp isn't spared here either. The salt film can disrupt sebum production, leading to even more irritation, especially for those with an already oily scalp . Combined with sun and wind, this creates a real drying cocktail.
Sure, the beach waves look always looks stunning, but saltwater sprays can have the same harmful effects as a day at the beach if used frequently.
Those who want to maintain that ocean glow should focus on moisturizing care and gentle detangling. After swimming, the usual advice applies: rinse, wash gently, dry gently, and don't forget to moisturize your scalp.
It is particularly important to condition the hair well before blow-drying in order to retain moisture and minimize the harmful effects of salt water.

Sun & UV radiation
The sun lifts your spirits, but unfortunately, it also leads to lightened and brittle hair. UV radiation destroys both your natural melanin and the artificial pigments in hair dyes. And as if that weren't enough, oxidation creates free radicals that attack your hair proteins. Consequently, your hair becomes more porous, more prone to split ends, and loses elasticity and shine.
Bleached, highlighted, or straightened hair is particularly sensitive. These hair structures are already open and absorb water, salt, and chlorine like a sponge. This makes it extremely prone to breakage when wet. Simply put: the sun acts like an uncontrolled bleaching agent.
And your scalp suffers silently, as always. Especially with lighter hair colors, it's unprotected, which can lead to feelings of tightness, dryness, or even sunburn. The latter is not only unpleasant but also an underestimated risk factor for skin cancer.
What helps? In summer, let's not just think about sunscreen, but also about UV protection for our hair. A stylish hat, leave-in products with antioxidants, nourishing masks , and a color-protecting shampoo are now part of your standard hair care routine. This way, your hair stays soft and shiny all summer long, and you can enjoy even the hottest days with a clear conscience and healthy, full hair!

Our new Detangler Brush
Our new PUR HAIR Detangler Brush glides effortlessly through wet or dry hair. The rounded bristles gently detangle without pulling or tearing.
Chlorinated water raises the pH level and opens the cuticle, the outer protective layer of your hair. This causes lipids and proteins to be lost. The hair appears dull, is difficult to comb, and dries out quickly.
Before swimming:
The green discoloration is caused by metal ions (e.g., copper) in the water that react with chlorine – not by the chlorine itself. In such cases, an acidic color remover at the hairdresser's or a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse at home can help.
Salt water draws moisture from the hair and forms so-called salt bridges:
After bathing:
Yes, UV rays destroy natural and artificial color pigments, lead to oxidative stress, and make hair porous. Bleached, highlighted, or straightened hair is particularly vulnerable.
